Connections Community Meeting

Salt Lake City, Utah

April 21-24, 2008

In April 2008, members of Connections will attend a three-and-a-half day, face-to-face meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from public health practitioners about the realities of a mature, integrated child health information system.  Utah's Child Health Advanced Regional Management (CHARM) system integrates data from several Utah Department of Health programs, and provides access to child health information for authorized users.

CHARM creates an electronic health record that allows participating healthcare programs and partners to share authorized data and track the health status of children for information such as: screening results, immunization status, referrals, and public health services received.  Authorized CHARM users are able to access up-to-date child health care information, identify children across multiple public health programs via a unique health record number, and receive automatically generated alert notices.

Attendees will learn more about the future plans for the Utah Health Information Network (UHIN), and the Clinical Health Information Exchange (CHIE) at this meeting.  Additional proposed topics for presentations include: 1) The Health Departments re-engineering of vital records, 2) family perspectives on health information exchange for children with special health care needs, 3) Utah's "Medical Home Portal," a Web-based system to share clinical information between the Health Department and community-based clinical care providers, 4) University of Utah's (U of U) initiative in developing a long-term follow-up system for children identified at risk for heritable disorders, 5) a presentation on GRID through U of U's CDC Center for Excellence in Public Health Informatics, and 6) Lessons learned from the implentation of the Newborn Blood Screening's new LIMS system.
