Principles, Core Functions, and Performance Measures for Integrated Information Systems
Purpose
This project advances public health’s ability to develop integrated child health information systems that support program goals and objectives. These programs include newborn dried blood spot screening, hearing screening, vital records, and others.
Working in cooperation with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA/MCHB), the Public Health Informatics Institute (the Institute) collaborated with state and local public health agencies, health care providers, and families to:
- define the underlying principles and core functions of integrated child health information systems.
- develop easily adaptable performance measures for public health agencies to assess their progress in meeting the functional requirements of an integrated system and its underlying principles.
Project summary
Development of the principles, core functions, and performance measures has been a collaborative effort, bringing together and actively engaging parents, health care providers, and state public health agencies to drive toward consensus on the common issues and elements of integrated child health information systems. With guidance from the Institute, these experienced subject matter experts created the draft principles, core functions, and performance measures.
Through a series of reviews and site visits, the
Institute elicited feedback from participants and revised the principles,
core functions, and performance measures. Five states then participated
in a pilot of the performance measures. Principles, Core Functions,
and Performance Measures will be submitted for publication in Spring
2006.
Client and funding source
These projects have been supported since 2000 through contracts with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA/MCHB), Genetic Services Branch.
