Topics in Public Health Informatics: The Big Picture

Why develop multiple, similar systems when our problem and information needs are similar? This topic brief provides an overview of the Institute's and the National Association of State Chief Information Officers' "big picture" enterprise approach to developing comprehensive, cohesive public health information systems. This planning—putting the logical before the physical—starts with stakeholder consensus and understanding of the problem and business processes and drives toward defining common requirements for the systems that will do the work.

Topics in Public Health Informatics: Public Health Opportunities in Health Information Exchange

Health information exchanges are organizations whose purpose is to exchange person-centric information relevant to the person’s health care. This paper provides a concise summary of the forces that have led to the health information exchange movement and the challenge to public health to participate in these organizations.  It describes the mutual benefits that public health and health care will derive from a health information exchange if public health is a viable partner.
Journal Supplement on Integration of Child Health Information Systems

A new supplement to the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice (November 2004) summarizes the unique informational needs of children’s health care and recent progress toward developing integrated child health information systems, with particular emphasis on public health activities.
Research Brief: Towards Measuring Value

The integration of public health newborn screening laboratory information management systems (LIMS) with child health program information systems promises to protect the health of children by assuring comprehensive follow-up and notification of screening results to the medical home. No method exists, however, for assessing the value produced by integrating systems. A nine-dimension framework was developed for assessing the value of integrating newborn screening LIMS with child health information systems. The evaluation framework represents an important first step toward developing metrics that can be consistently applied in the evaluation of public health information systems.

This resource describes the strategic approach of the Public Health Informatics Institute to assist health organizations to apply and manage information systems. It outlines four simple principles and a series of questions that must be addressed to develop effective health information systems.
