Meaningful Use and Public Health

The Stage 2 Meaningful Use Public Health Reporting Requirements Task Force has published guidance for public health agencies (PHAs) preparing for Stage 2 Meaningful Use (MU2).

ONC encourages public health agencies (PHAs) to support MU2 public health objectives. These objectives represent opportunities for PHAs to improve their surveillance capabilities across a range of diseases and conditions. Healthcare providers in public health jurisdictions that lack the capacity to support MU2 objectives will be exempted from those objectives. However, this will result in lost opportunities to both improve public health surveillance and build relationships between public health and healthcare in those jurisdictions.

MU2 is fast approaching! We urge all PHAs to review the guidance material developed by this Task Force and do what they can to seize the opportunities Meaningful Use brings to public health.
